WALTER J. PHILLIPS
Morning.

Color woodcut, 1924. 183x195 mm; 7⅛x7⅝ inches, wide margins. Signed, titled and numbered 13/150 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression.

Phillips (1884-1963) is known for popularizing the color woodcut in Canada. Born in England, he studied at the Birmingham School of Art and lived abroad in South Africa and Paris before moving to Canada in 1913, settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He befriended the English artist Cyril H. Barraud (1877-1965) who introduced him to printmaking, particularly etching. In 1917, Phillips began to teach himself color woodcut printmaking, which brought him commercial success. In the 1920s and 1930s he was Canada's most famous printmaker and exhibited internationally. Throughout his career he produced over 200 prints. In 1933, he was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 1940, he became the resident artist at the Banff Centre, then known as the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in the development of their visual arts program. Boulet 75.
