Two items Signed: Autograph Letter * Autograph Note.

The letter, "My dear Solicitor" [Solicitor General John Hope?], expressing surprise and sorrow at the news of the death of his solicitor's "noble relative." The note, to an unnamed recipient, 4 lines: "I have made the discovery on turning the page that this is an odd corner torn off the sheet of letter paper . . . ," on a slip of paper. Each 1 page, small 4to or 1½x7 inches; first with remnants of mounting at corners and along right edge verso, second with remnants of mounting overall verso, folds.

  • Notes: 3 September: "I received with equal sorrow and surprize the calamitous news which your letter announces. . . .
    "His high military services, his sufferings in his Country's cause, his unblemished worth of character and height of principle rendered him a pillar on which many eyes were fixed, and now it has fallen suddenly when it seemed firm on its basis. God comfort the afflicted widow and family deprived of such a man, and grant we may not see a day when his loss will be found incapable of being replaced to his country . . . ."
