(WAR OF 1812.) Elegy on the Death of James Lawrence.
ONE OF THE FIRST WOOD ENGRAVINGS PRODUCED IN BOSTON (WAR OF 1812.) Elegy on the Death of James Lawrence. Broadside, 369 x 243 mm, printed area 325 x 208. Wood engraving on silk, early tack holes, folds and soiling on margins, minor dampstaining visible on lower margin verso. [Boston]: A. Bowen, [circa 1813?]
- Notes: Printed to commemorate the death of U.S. naval hero James Lawrence, who died from wounds suffered during a battle at Boston Harbor aboard the U.S. Frigate Chesapeake. The author of the elegy is unknown, but the broadside was designed, engraved and printed by Abel Bowen (1790-1850). Sinclair Hamilton's Early American Book Illustrators and Wood Engravers, I:78, asserts that Bowen was the first wood engraver in Boston, and that this illustration was his earliest known work. A well-preserved copy. Only 3 institutions report copies on WorldCat, and apparently not seen at auction since a copy was handled by Swann in 1965.
