(WAR OF 1812.) Hopkinson, Joseph. A letter discussing the delicate diplomatic efforts to stay out of war with Great Britain. Autograph Letter Signed to William Meredith of Philadelphia, 3 pages, 10 x 8 1/2 inches, on one folding sheet with postmarked address panel on final blank; short separations at folds, minor wear and toning. With typed transcript. Washington, 12 February 1808

  • Notes: Joseph Hopkinson (1770-1842) was a well-connected Philadelphia lawyer, perhaps best known for writing the words to the anthem "Hail Columbia." He later served as a congressman and district court judge. Here, writing from Washington, where he was in regular contact with congressmen, he wrote "It is now universally understood here, and I do not doubt it, that the affair of the Chesapeake no longer stands in the way of an amicable adjustment of our British dispute. . . . I am sure these people do not want to go to war with Great Britain; yet a sudden reconciliation with her might bring down the vengeance of Bonaparte; while by keeping the thing hanging we may escape both."
