(WAR OF 1812.) King, William. General order announcing Perry's victory in the Battle of Lake Erie.

(WAR OF 1812.) King, William. General order announcing Perry's victory in the Battle of Lake Erie. Document Signed as colonel and adjutant general on behalf of Major General Wade Hampton, 2 pages, 9 3/4 x 8 inches; short repairs along folds, 2 wormholes in text area, mounting tape along one edge verso. Chateaugay, NY, 30 September 1813

  • Notes: General order issued to the 4,000 American troops on the New York border preparing for an attack on Montreal: "Maj. General Hampton has much satisfaction in announcing to the Army the glorious naval victory of Commodore Perry on Lake Erie, who has captured the whole of the enemies squadron." General Hampton (grandfather of the Confederate cavalry hero of the same name) was then engaged in an ill-fated mission to invade Quebec. He used Perry's news to encourage his troops: "A moment may not be lost in preparation for the part this army is to act . . . . Some hardships may be encountered, but they will be short, and the reward will be in proportion." A military salute was ordered to celebrate Perry's feat.
