(WAR OF 1812.) Perry's Victory. Broadside, 281 x 220 mm; printing area 252 x 170 mm; dampstaining, wear at extremities, and splits at folds, slightly affecting text. The bottom left corner, which may have once included the imprint, has been cut out. Ink stamp reading "Charles D. Boynton" and manuscript docketing on verso. Np, nd

  • Notes: An unusual printing of this popular ballad, written to commemorate Oliver Hazard Perry's 1813 victory at the Battle of Lake Erie. Illustrated over the title with a semi-circular border, an engraving of an eagle, and 15 bars of the music. The first lines read "YE Tars of Columbia give ear to my story, Who fought with brave Perry where the cannon did roar." The American Antiquarian Society holds several printings of this ballad, but none seem to match these dimensions.
  • Condition: A series of short (mostly less than 10 mm) vertical splits and small holes along both the vertical and horizontal folds. The largest hole is at the intersection of folds, not affecting text (visible in the illustration). The first two lines of the eighth verse, beginning "Brave Elliot's valour must now be recorded," are also slightly affected as shown in the illustration. Several short horizontal splits along the right margin are also visible in the illustration. The paper is limp but seems stable despite the old water damage. Top left corner is dogeared but complete, which is not evident from the illustration.
