Warren Hastings

Three items, each Signed: Documents (2) * Autograph Letter.

The documents, as Governor General, each a bill of exchange requesting that East India Company ("United Company of Merchants of England trading to the East Indies") pay £50 or £62.10 to Roger Elliot Roberts or William Burnet in 12 months. Each additionally signed by Supreme Councilors Richard Barwell and either George Monson or John Clavering. 9¾x15¼ or 9x14 inches; this first with folds and signed to Mrs. Frances Roberts on verso, the second mounted to board trimmed to size with minor loss to text at edges and with moderate toning along left and right edges. The ALS, to Lewis Mestayer, conveying a complaint from his servants that Mestayer had prevented his fisherman from placing nets in the river and imprisoned his messenger ("Harcarra"). 1½ pages, 4to, with integral address leaf; hole at upper corner from seal tear repaired with paper, collector's blind stamp at upper edge, folds, Mestayer wrote a reply on the blank.
