Document Signed, "G:Washington," with holograph date and endorsement Signature on verso, statement to Richard Smith on the account of his claim to the land granted him under the Proclamation of 1754, showing a cash payment to Smith of £1.1 in 1771 and, on the verso, payment of the remainder of £1.3.8 to William Crawford. Additionally signed on verso by Smith and Crawford. 1 page, 4 1/4x8 inches; complete separation at horizontal fold (without loss and not affecting signature), small masking tape repair on verso, faint dampstaining at all edges, scattered minor soiling; suspended between panes of glass and framed.   • Notes: "This Proportion of the Expence of Exploring, Surveying, Patenting and other Incident Charges, attending the Grant of 200,000 Acres of Land under the Proclamation . . . his part--per order of Council being 500 Acres--on the Sundry Creeks in a Patent for 28.627 Acres . . . ."
    In 1754, Governor Robert Dinwiddie formed the Virginia Regiment under the command of Washington to fight in the Seven Years' War, granting land under the Proclamation of 1754 to the volunteers from the militia in exchange for their service. Washington was involved in ensuring that his soldiers received their due.
