WASHINGTON, GEORGE. Partly-printed vellum Document Signed, "G:Washington," as President of the Society of the Cincinnati,

SOCIETY OF THE CINCINNATI CERTIFICATE WASHINGTON, GEORGE. Partly-printed vellum Document Signed, "G:Washington," as President of the Society of the Cincinnati, appointing John H. Buell a member of the Society. Countersigned by Secretary of the Society Henry Knox. 14 1/2x21 inches; mounted at all edges to board trimmed to size, uneven toning overall, some loss to lower right corner expertly repaired, some fading to text (but still legible), bold signatures; matted and framed. Philadelphia, 10 May 1787

  • Notes: When first organized at the end of the Revolution by Henry Knox, Jedidiah Huntington and Baron von Steuben, the Society of the Cincinnati restricted its membership to the officers of the Continental Army and their firstborn descendants. Membership requirements have changed only slightly over the years, and today the select members of the Society continue to keep alive the memory of the sacrifices made for American liberty.
John Hutchinson Buell (1753-1813) enlisted for the Lexington Alarm in 1775, then served in the Continental Infantry in 1776, achieved the rank of major, and resigned from the army after his engagement at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794.
See lot 145 for Buell's 1793 appointment as Major in the Second Sub-Legion. Buell's diary, written while serving as captain in the Connecticut Line between 1780 and 1784, sold with related items for $60,000 in lot 41 of Swann's October 10, 2013 Americana auction.
