- Notes: A nice example of an early American engraved commission, with Thackara and Vallance's imprint in the bottom margin. Porter (1755-1822) served throughout the Revolution, including the Battle of Bunker Hill, and was one of few Continental Army officers to be commissioned in the U. S. army. Shortly after this appointment, Porter served under Anthony Wayne in the campaign against the Northwestern Indians.
