Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) & Franz Marc (1880-1916)

Der Blaue Reiter.

Munich: R. Piper & Co., 1914.
Second edition, limited issue, quarto; with four tipped in pochoir plates protected by printed tissue guards, including one by Kandinsky and another by Marc, four leaves of music at rear, two folding, numerous black-and-white reproductions throughout, as well as four initial letters and one vignette designed by Marc; bound in original printed white cloth boards, with color lithograph design by Kandinsky in blue and orange on front board, edges stained yellow, silk ties intact (occasional small smudges, creasing to frontispiece tissue guard; light rubbing to front panel, but otherwise very bright); 11 ½ x 8 5/8 in.

First published in 1912, Der Blaue Reiter is "one of the most important German books of modern art." The present second edition was intended to be a separate almanac, but with the onset of World War I, Kandinsky and Marc chose to re-issue the first edition instead. The publication is the foundational text for the famous Blue Rider collective (founded by Kandinsky and Marc), a group of influential German expressionist artists and musicians who advocated for artistic freedom in connection with spirituality and emotion.

The Artist and the Book, 139.
