WEBSTER, NOAH. Autograph Letter Signed, "N Webster," to "Mr Editors [sic],"

"MY QUARTO DICTIONARY . . . IS NOW USED AS AUTHORITY IN OUR HIGHEST TRIBUNALS" WEBSTER, NOAH. Autograph Letter Signed, "N Webster," to "Mr Editors [sic]," correcting certain errors concerning him committed by newspaper publishers, explaining that some buyers of books similar to his own mistakenly assume that a new book is better than an older one, and hoping that the success of his books would enable him to publish a new edition of his dictionary. 1 page, 4to; remnants of prior mounting at corners verso. (MRS) Np, nd

  • Notes: "The publishers of Newspapers sometimes use my name without authority or good cause. A few days ago, it was publishers in New York, that I was seen in Wall Street, although I have not been in the city for more than two years.
"The Baltimore publishers seem to think that my books formerly had some reputation, but that they are supplanted in the hearts of youth. Now the fact is that the sales of my elementary books have been increasing ever since the first publication, & never so rapidly as within the last year or two. The plan of the work was original, & has been adopted in every compilation of a similar kind. All the Spelling Books since publishing, & they have been very numerous, are constructed on my model. The plagiarists have made use of my improvements to supplant the original works, & if they now succeeded, they would have deprived my family of bread, & prevented the execution of my Quarto dictionary, which is now used as authority in our highest tribunals from Maine to Louisiana, & made the model of works compiled in France & Germany. To effect the object, agents & lecturers have traveled from one end of the United States to the other, to depreciate my books, & introduce others. In some districts of country, they have succeeded; for a new book is often mistaken for a better one. But when the mistake is discovered, the teachers resume the use of my book; & some of them, after being harassed with changes, have rejected all the new books, & say they will use none but mine.
"I hope the sales of my books will enable me to publish another edition of my large dictionary, that my fellow citizens may not be obliged to depend, as they now do, on imported copies. . . ."
