WEEGEE [ARTHUR FELLIG] (1899-1968) American Girl. 1953.

WEEGEE [ARTHUR FELLIG] (1899-1968)

American Girl. 1953.
Silver print, the image measuring 191x184 mm; 7½x7¼ inches, the sheet 254x194 mm; 10x7 5/8 inches, with Weegee's signature in ink on recto.

  • Condition: Weegee's "American Girl" is a dynamic photograph with a bright lustrous surface.

The print is ferrotyped, and evidences the slight surface inconsistencies associated with that process, but these are minor and go largely unnoticed in typical viewing conditions. Under raking light, scattered soft and unobtrusive handling marks can be seen within the image area, but these don't detract from the overall presentation and playfulness of the photograph, and should be considered inherent and typical to Weegee's vintage prints.

The margins of the print are overall bright. There is what appears to be period tape at all four corner margins, also not uncommon to Weegee's work. There is also an isolated area of faint discoloration in the bottom margin. The work is professionally hinged to a mat with Weegee's signature is still visible in ink on verso.
