WEEGEE [ARTHUR FELLIG] (1899-1968) At the Palace Theater. 1945.

WEEGEE [ARTHUR FELLIG] (1899-1968)
At the Palace Theater. 1945.
Silver ferrotyped print, the image measuring 13 3/8x10 5/8 inches (34x27 cm.), the sheet 14x11 1/8 inches (35.6x28.3 cm.), with Weegee's Photo-Representatives and Credit Weegee the Famous stamps and various notations in grease pencil, on verso.

  • Condition: Weegee's "At the Palace Theater" (1945) is a bright, contrasty print, with the photographer's typical cinematic and atmospheric approach to image-making. The print evidences the condition imperfections characteristic of Weegee's work, but these do not detract from the composition.

In raking light it is possible to find scattered handling creases throughout the image area (which is ferrotyped) and margins. This includes small half-moon marks as well as craquelure creases, and a long vertical crease along the right edge. Though evident throughout, the print retains its strength and contrasty presence.

Print verso with Weegee's Photo-Representatives and Credit Weegee the Famous stamps and various notations in grease pencil. The print is slightly warmed at the edges, which is, again, typical.

    A strong work.
