WEEGEE [ARTHUR FELLIG] (1899-1968) Distortions, from the Washington Monument series.

WEEGEE [ARTHUR FELLIG] (1899-1968)
Distortions, from the Washington Monument series. Together, a panoramic composition of four photographs. Silver ferrotyped prints, the images measuring 9½x7 5/8 inches (24.1x19.4 cm.), and smaller, the sheets slightly larger, overall measuring 10x21 inches (25.4x53.3 cm.), each with Weegee's 6606 St. Trances Terrace Hollywood credit stamp and a Photo Representatives stamp on verso. Circa 1950s

Provenance: Gift of the Artist to the Collection of Louis Stettner

  • Condition: Weegee's panoramic montage of Washington Monuments has bright contrasty tones, including deep rich blacks and white and gray highlight tones.

The montage includes four prints with images of following sizes:
    Print 1: 9½x2½ inches, Print 2: 9½x2¾ inches, Print 3 : 8 7/8x 7 5/8 inches, and Print 4 : 9½x7 5/8 inches

The surface of each print is ferrotyped and evidences the slight inconsistencies associated with this process. The surface also shows scattered handling creases and small impressions, as is typical to Weegee's work. Many of these are largely visible in raking light, but they are present throughout the sheets.

Below are noted the most important issues on each print:
Print 1: long crease crossing the image with no emulsion loss, small half-moon impression, and a small tear in the thin lower white margin entering slightly the image.
Print 2: Faint craquelure vertical line only visible under raking light.
Print 3: diagonal crease with no emulsion loss on the lower right corner
Print 4: diagonal crease with no emulsion loss on the lower left corner

A lovely example of his panoramic experimentations.
