WEEGEE [Arthur Fellig] (1899-1968) John Jovino gun shop, New York.

WEEGEE [Arthur Fellig] (1899-1968)
John Jovino gun shop, New York. Silver ferrotyped print, the image measuring 7 5/8x9 3/8 inches (19.4x23.8 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Weegee's signature in ink on recto, and his signature again in pencil and his Photo-Representatives and Photograph by Weegee stamps on verso. Circa 1942

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

  • Condition: Weegee's surreal image of the John Jovino gun shop is in good to very good condition. The tones of the print are contrasty and bright.

The print is ferrotyped and evidences some of the faint surface inconsistencies associated with that process, but these are primarily visible in strong raking light. The print also shows the scattered surface imperfections associated with Weegee's work, including soft handling creases, linear creases, and diagonal creases at the corners. These are largely most visible at the edges and corners, and visible when viewing the print under careful, strongly-lit viewing conditions. There is a small closed tear at the right center margin, which just touches the image area. With Weegee's signature in blue in ink in the lower margin.

Print verso is very lightly soiled at the edges. With two of Weegee's stamps and his name again, in pencil.
