WRITTEN DURING THE PRELUDE TO THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO WELLINGTON, ARTHUR WELLESLEY; 1ST DUKE. Autograph Letter Signed, "Wellington," to General [Alan] Cameron, concerning his son's bad conduct and his absence from the Army. 2 1/2 pages, 4to, written on a single folded sheet; short closed separations at folds. Paris, 18 January 1815

  • Notes: ". . . I have received your letter of the 12th and I had before received that which you favorably wrote to me about your son. Persons who, like me, have much to attend to, ought to have a double portion of time: or those who must be conscious that they can feel nothing towards them but good will, and know that they have only the time allotted to the Mortals should cause them, if they exist to perform well to officer or rather duties of society and friendship. . . . I had every reason to be horrified with his conduct, and I wish it has been in my power to mark my sense of it in a manner that would have been . . . beneficial to him. . . . I regret it much. I am glad to hear he is well enough to be moved and by land; and I will consent to his absence from the Army if he delays some of the Regiment conferring it, after receiving the final application . . . ."
