WELLS, H.G. Two Typescripts Signed, with numerous holograph corrections throughout, each an open letter addressed to the Editor of the Daily Express Ralph David Blumenfeld. The first, entitled "Mr. H.G. Wells''s Philippics," responding to [Horatio] Bottomley''s false characterizations of Wells''s socialistic views. The second, entitled "A Republican Society for Great Britain," recommending that Great Britain prepare to leave behind the obsolete trappings of monarchy. Together 3 pages, folio, onionskin paper; faint scattered soiling, folds. (MRS) NP, circa 1916

  • Notes: The first: ". . . The fact remains, and it will remain although Mr Bottomley continues to shower insults upon me . . . , that he took a quotation from my ''Socialism and the Family,'' cut off certain words at the end and added words with a diametrically opposite meaning.
"For that trick he offers no apology, he simply routs about for new possibilities of misrepresentation. . . . I have written to the press about [Mr Bottomley''s] feats of falsehood not because I care a rap about him, but because I do want to make clear to the Unionist gentlemen of the north of England just how victory is being organized by their agents."
The second: ". . . [I]t will be . . . a grave negligence of our duty to liberal aspirations throughout the world, if thinking men in the British community do not now take unambiguous steps to make it clear to the republicans of Europe, Asia and the American continent that these ancient trappings of throne and sceptre are at most a mere historical inheritance of ours, and that our spirit is warmly and entirely against the dynamic system that has so long divided, embittered, and wasted the sprit of mankind. . . ."
