Group of press photographs of public housing in Denver.

Denver, CO, 1939-1989 (bulk 1973-1981)
47 photographs, most about 8 x 10 inches and some smaller, with Denver Post inked stamps, clippings and captions on verso; occasional crop marks in images, generally minor wear.

  • Notes:

These documentary press photographs range in tone from scenes of everyday joy through the depths of despair. Views framed through broken windows, laundry hung in courtyards, a man sleeping on a blanket in a hallway, smiling children, trash piles, and small garden plots are all included.  Locations include the Stapleton Homes, Lincoln Park, Westwood, Glen Willow, East Village Apartments, Arapahoe Courts, Columbine Homes, and Sun Valley.

Most were taken by photographer Dave Buresh for stories in 1973, 1976 and 1981. A handful are earlier than 1973, including a shot from 1939 of the neighborhood to be demolished for the city's first housing project; a condemned veteran's housing project in 1953; and 3 from the 1960s.
