(WEST--TEXAS.) First report of the fall of the Alamo, from Jim Bowie's home state, in an issue of the Frankfort Commonwealth. 4 pages, 22 x 17 3/4 inches, on 2 disbound sheets; moderate foxing. Frankfort, KY, 13 April 1836

  • Notes: A first report of the Alamo. It notes the probable deaths of two local heroes: Kentucky native Jim Bowie, and David Crockett from neighboring Tennessee:

"The rumors (and they too most probably true) in relation to the situation of the Province of Texas are of a most painful character. It is stated that Santa Anna had appeared before San Antonio at the head of a large army--had recaptured the fortress and put the garrison to the sword. Among the Texian troops in San Antonio at the time of its capture--was Col. David Crockett and Col. Bowie, both of whom it was said are slaughtered. . . . The above information is derived from a gentleman of this place who conversed with a very intelligent citizen of this state who was direct from the province."

With--a later issue of the Commonwealth with a fuller report on the Alamo's fall. "The kind-hearted, brave David Crockett, and a few of the devoted friends who entered the fort with him, were found lying together, with 24 of the slain enemy around them." Also several other pieces on the war in Texas. Frankfort, KY, 25 May 1836
