(WEST.) Papers of Nebraska stagecoach operator and Montana rancher J.E. Mason.

(WEST.) Papers of Nebraska stagecoach operator and Montana rancher J.E. Mason. 34 items (1.6 linear feet), mostly account books; minor to moderate wear. Various places, 1892-1942

  • Notes: Joseph Ezub Mason (1865-1932) went west with his parents to Colorado, spent his young adulthood in Wyoming and Nebraska, and settled in Billings, Montana in 1900.

The Alliance-Gering Stage Line covered a 60-mile distance in western Nebraska. Through early 1898 it was run by the J.C. Bales & J.E. Mason partnership, which became Walsh & Mason by April. Included in this lot is the Walsh & Mason freight ledger from April 1898 through January 1900, 126 pages plus index. 5 smaller memoranda books include freight and other records from 1892 to 1900, presumably from the same line. The lone photograph in the lot shows two Mason freight wagons, with Joseph E. Mason Sr. in the second wagon, in Alliance, NE in 1898.

From 1900 onward, Mason was a farmer and merchant in Billings, MT; he apparently ran a general store (a company store on his ranch?) and sold coal. Included are 5 ledgers and daybooks from 1900-1914. Also included are 2 small notebooks for Bell & Mason, Railroad Contractors, from 1900-1906. One of them records the days worked for dozens of laborers.

Other records in this collection relate to John Book Taylor (1863-1947) of Cascade, Montana. His relationship to the Masons is unknown. He served as an officer with the Crown Butte Canal and Reservoir Company, formed in 1890 to irrigate a large area of Montana west of Great Falls; the work stalled and was completed after 1903. This collection includes their minute books, 1903-1912 and 1930-1942; their stock certificate book, 1918-1937; and their checkbook, 1918-1920. Also included is Taylor's livestock inventory book, 1916-1940; and the ledger of the J.B. Taylor Livestock Co., 1920-1931.

Two personal scrapbooks are included: one by J.E. Mason's son covering his time in high school and the state university, 1926-1941; and one by a Louis Noffsinger from 1925-1929 (relation unknown).

Finally, the lot contains one printed book: Ansel Watrous, "History of Latimer County, Colorado," 1911. The book discusses J.E. Mason's father Augustine Mason (1830-1901), who is also pictured, pages 451-452.
