Edward Weston's Gifts to His Sister, 46.

In the spring of 1935 Edward Weston started a new business venture, which he called the "Edward Weston Print-of-the Month Club." Laid in to issues of Camera Craft magazine was a note explaining that, although prints by Weston typically cost $15 to $20, members of the club could purchase them for only $5 (or $60 for the year).

Each month subscribers would automatically receive a new print. The total edition size for each photograph would not exceed forty (35 for the subscribers and 5 for the photographer). Unfortunately, Weston apparently received no more than 11 paid subscriptions. Thus, only 12 monthly prints were ever issued.

This particular photograph was his September selection. Weston scholar Amy Conger states that, "This composition was taken off Route 101 just outside of Pismo Beach, near Oceano. . . Edward created a very exciting rhythm by placing the fence as a diagonal on his ground glass starting in the exact bottom left corner. The slats of the barn, running vertically up the barn, peak right behind one of the highest of the flame-like branches of the dead tree."
