WHALING SHIP'S PAPERS GRANT, ULYSSES S. Partly-printed Document Signed, as President, 4-language ship's papers to Captain West Mitchell for the whaling voyage of the bark Mount Wollaston. Countersigned by Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. 1 page, folio sheet; folded in half with the two sides taped together and taped to a matting board (probably removeable) with minor resulting staining, separation at horizontal fold. Washington, 8 July 1872

  • Notes: Leaving from New Bedford on 9 July 1872 for the North Pacific, Mitchell was forced to abandon the ship in the Arctic in 1876. The whaling expedition during those four years was quite successful, capturing over 2000 whales. See Starbuck, History of the American Whale Fishery, volume 2, page 644.
