  • Notes: Captain Charles Williams Fisher (1835-1905) of Martha's Vineyard, MA was the master on several whaling voyages, in the bark Alaska and other vessels. In 1885, he married Parnell "Nellie" Pease (1855-1925) and brought her on a four-year whaling voyage in the South Pacific; her journal of the voyage was sold in Swann's 4 February sale, lot 284. Most notable in this lot is her seven-page February 1887 letter to sister Cristie, written while she was recuperating on Norfolk Island off Australia. She describes the comings and goings of other whaling vessels and adds "I hope Capt Fisher's vessel will be the next to come in." This lot also includes: an 1899 letter to Mrs. Fisher reporting on her husband's whaling successes off Alaska * an undated note on Capt. Fisher's medical treatment in New Zealand * Carte-de-visite photograph of Chatham Island war implements, printed in New Zealand, undated * Bill of lading and 4 receipts for the bark Alaska, all dated Russell, New Zealand, 1881-84 * 3 bills of lading for other whaling vessels, New Zealand, 1878-82 * Partly printed whaling contract signed by J.D. Manley of Rhode Island in New Bedford, MA, 1876 * Manuscript transcript of a hymn which begins "Joyfully joyfully onward I move," transcribed by Beulah Huxford, 1855 * Undated partial letter concerning bomb lances and other whaling business, signed by J.
