Brush, ink and charcoal portrait of Blanche K[elso]. Bruce. 19 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches, unsigned but authenticated. Fine condition. Np, [1967] ONE OF FOUR PORTRAITS BY WHITE FOR THE BOOK FOUR TOOK FREEDOM. The other three individuals about whom this book was written and whose portraits White drew were Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Tubman. The book, by Philip Sterling and Rayford Logan, was published in 1967. This image appears both on the cover and at page 97. Of the Negro Senators elected after the Civil War and reconstruction, Blanche K. Bruce was the first Negro Senator to serve the full term of six years.
