Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, New York.

In 1985, Whitfield Lovell was the recipient of both the Eastman Scholarship to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and a fellowship at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, where he created these large linocut and drypoint portraits. Another portrait, the drypoint Mrs. Jones, is now in the collection of the Library of Congress. He also exhibited prints in the 1985 show Through a Master Printer: Robert Blackburn and the Printmaking Workshop at the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
