WHITTIER, JOHN GREENLEAF. Autograph Letter Signed, to "My Dear [Henry] Wilson," complimenting him on "a great and noble work that thee propose for thyself . . . an actor in the struggle for the last 30 years," regretting that he cannot comply as he is "just now too ill with my head and eyes to write as thee wish," and asking, "What is the prospect for U.S. Senator at the next election?" 2 pages, 8vo, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; inlaid. Amesbury, 15 June 1869

  • Notes: Henry Wilson (1812-1875) was a life-long foe of slavery, a 4-term senator from Massachusetts, and Vice President in Grant's second term; he and Whittier were friends and frequent correspondents.
