- Notes: Whitworth (1803-87) was a mechanical engineer known for his innovations in machine tool manufacture and mechanical construction. He also made notable advances in firearms production, to which he devoted much of his attention following the Crimean War. "Whitworth was a pioneer of modern production engineering, outstanding for his refinement and systemization of engineering methods. His mind was that of an experimentalist" (ODNB).
