  • Notes: The Rochester Ladies Anti-Slavery Society was nominally headed by Maria Porter, and included other family members. The Porter family was one of the leading anti-slavery forces in Rochester, New York. It was here that Frederick Douglass set up his new home, headquarters and North Star newspaper, after parting ways with Garrison and the Boston abolitionists. The 12th and 13th Reports carry first-hand descriptions of the condition of the Contrabands at Alexandria Virginia as reported by Julia Wilbur, who traveled there for the Society. These reports are rich with detailed information on the progress of the War and Reconstruction, slaves, freedmen and contrabands; plus their financial reports, with information on the sale of Frederick Douglass's newspaper.
