  • Notes: ". . . You know that I have a contract to enter into a competition with you -- in the way of a biography of De Soto. Longman's one joy to let me enter also into competition with St. Thomas Aquinas, with the book rejected by Doubleday. At last they've agreed to give me a tentative contract: $500 & five months to show what I can do. . . ."
