WILDER, THORNTON. The Woman of Andros. First American and First English Edition. Together, 2 Inscribed volumes. 8vo, cloth; dust jackets; English Edition in a cloth folding box, jacket slightly browned along spine. New York and London, 1930

  • Notes: both inscribed and signed by wilder on title-pages. English edition Inscribed to close friend Maude Hutchins. In August 1928, Wilder, boxer Gene Tunney, and Robert Maynard Hutchins (dean of Yale Law School), and his wife Maude met at the Ritz bar in Paris. F. Scott Fitzgerald, who was also there, proceeded to drink too much and make a fool of himself by flattering to excess the attractive Maude, who put him in line with a few well-chosen phrases. The budding Wilder-Fitzgerald relationship would not survive the encounter.
