Will Barnet painted Boys on the Rug during the early 1940s while his children Peter and Richard were very young. Soon after Peter was born in 1938, Barnet's subjects became almost exclusively his family and home life. Despite living in a small railroad apartment on the Upper West Side, Barnet believed that his studio should be in the home, and enjoyed drawing these domestic and childhood scenes from life. Barnet was fascinated by his children and their inner lives, and painted from their point of view by kneeling on the floor. Works from this period exude a warmth and familiarity not present in his previous street scenes, though Barnet continued to experiment with pure color and a form's relationship with space. Color was part of Barnet's personal symbolism; in describing his 1939 woodcut, Under the Table of Peter playing, Barnet stated that he associated light yellows and blues with childhood; yellow, alongside other warm colors, is abundant in Boys on the Rug. Barnet continued to look inward during the outbreak of World War II. Perhaps turning to subjects of his young family acted as a cocoon against the War's atrocities, or an effort to recapture humanity. Later, coinciding with the birth of his grandchildren, he would return to the subject of family.
