WILLIAM BURGIS New York. [London, 1733]. Engraved view, approximately 120x265 mm image size, clipped from Henry Popple's Map of the British Empire in America; top margin just outside the neat line, lightly toned. Stokes I: page 242. E800/1,200 The original Burgis view of New York, which is of the utmost scarcity, was issued on a much larger scale in about 1720. "A reduced copy of the Burgis View was published as an inset to the Popple map, the first issue of which appeared in 1732 and bears the signature of W. H. Toms, engravedabove the reference letter 'O' on the Brooklyn shore, near the Ferry. The view was also issued separately from the map, printed on a folio sheet with similar views of Quebec, Niagara, and the city of Mexico, but without signature [see the following lot]"-Stokes.
