WILLIAM EDOUARD SCOTT (1884 - 1964) Untitled (Haitian Fishermen at Dawn).

WILLIAM EDOUARD SCOTT (1884 - 1964)
Untitled (Haitian Fishermen at Dawn).

Oil on wood panel, circa 1931. 330x240 mm; 13x9 1/2 inches. Signed in oil, lower left.

Provenance: private collection.

Scott spent a year painting in Port-au-Prince in 1931 on a Julius Rosenwald scholarship. This painting is a wonderful example of the lively activities of fishermen he painted - his large Night Turtle Fishing in Haiti is in the Clark Atlanta University Collection of Afro-American Art. His visit to Haiti is also credited for stimulating an interest in painting local scenes with Haitian artists, and possibly inspired Aaron Douglas to visit there during his Rosenwald scholarship in 1938. Reynolds/Wright p. 255.
