An early success story from Indianapolis, Scott trained at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1904-08, and then lived abroad in Europe studying with Henry Ossawa Tanner. When he returned from Europe in 1912, he toured the South to paint rural scenes such as this. Scott was a prolific artist who completed many murals and won several scholarships for painting in the 1920s and 30s, including the Harmon Foundation gold medal in 1927 and a Rosenwald fellowship to Haiti in 1931.
