William Lithgow (1582-1645?)

The Totall Discourse of the Rare Adventures and Painful Peregrinations.

London: Nicholas Okes, to be sold by Nicolas Fussell & Humphery Mosley, 1632.
Quarto, engraved portrait frontispiece of Lithgow in an elaborate turban and vestments (added from another edition; trimmed and mounted); the same composition rendered as a full page woodcut recurs later in the text, along with several other lively large text woodcuts, including a few illustrating torture techniques of the Holy Inquisition; large chunk torn away from title affecting 7 lines (paper repaired); the following 75 pages with corner damage to a diminishing degree (patched on each page); imprint cropped at bottom; bottom lines very closely trimmed throughout with some losses to catchwords and signature marks; other loss to outside corners repaired; worming; later 19th century boards (binding failed, both boards detached); 7 x 5 1/4 in.

STC 15713; ESTC S108574.

Lithgow was a prodigious traveler whose published works expanded as his journeying increased. He introduced Europeans to many delights outside their borders in his pages, including coffee and tobacco. Lithgow was suspected to be an English spy and was taken into custody and tortured by the Spanish Inquisition in Malaga. He lived to tell the tale!
