WILLIAMS, JAMES. A Narrative of Events, since the First of August, 1834. 23 pages. Small 8vo, disbound; some minor soiling to outer leaves. London: John Haddon, [1837]
- Notes: first edition. One of very few autobiographical texts by a Caribbean slave or ex-slave. The emancipation of slaves in the British West Indies in 1834 created a labor shortage. The British tried to fill this void by importing coolie labor from India and by apprenticing the now "free" blacks. The result was virtual slavery, and according to this narrative, conditions were often worse than before emancipation. Sabin 104237; Hubbard 1589.
