(WILLIAMSBURG.) Semple, James. Autograph Document Signed, a detaileddescription of a lot of land for sale "being on which Dr. Pasture [sic] originally erected houses and to which several pieces of land have been added so as to make a lott [sic] of 140 yards front and 85 yards back, buildings as stated below, price L900" and for an additional 150 acres of land below the town. With a small sketch of the layout of the buildings on the lot. 1 page, single tall 4to sheet;minor browning, a bit ragged along right edge. Williamsburg, 29 July 1809 E2,000/3,000 Dr. Pasteur owned colonial Williamsburg's apothecaryshop on Main Street (now Duke of Gloucester Street). Semple, a legal figure in the town, appears to be offer-ing the land on behalf of another owner. The description below identifies the land between the street and Mr. Bassett's land, i.e. Bassett Hall, later home to John D Rockefeller, Jr. and describes the buildings on the land (including two offices, a two-level house, stables, and kitchen) and the quality of the soil and well water. James City County records were sent to Richmond for safety during the Civil War, but were destroyed when the city was burned in April 1865. Thus, early Williamsburg land records such as this are of considerable scarcity.
