WILSON, HENRY. "Passage of Wilson's Bill . . . to make free the wives and children of colored soldiers."

WILSON, HENRY. "Passage of Wilson's Bill . . . to make free the wives and children of colored soldiers." Single Autograph manuscript page, not signed. [Washington, circa 1864-1865]

  • Notes: Henry Wilson (1812-1875) was the 18th Vice President of the United States (1873-1875) and a Senator from Massachusetts (1855-1873). Before and during the American Civil War, he was a leading Republican and a strong opponent of slavery. This note was possibly intended for a member of the press. Wilson was devoted to the destruction of the "Slave Power"--the bloc of slave owners and their political allies which anti-slavery Americans saw as dominating the country. Considered a "Radical Republican," he supported the Radical program for Reconstruction. He was the author of the monumental 3 volume History of the Rise and Fall of the Slave Power in the America.
