This work is part of a series of images the German filmmaker took while he was traveling in the Western United States in late 1983 in preparation for his movie Paris, Texas. The work resulted in a publication entitled Written in the West (Krefeld): Te Neues Publishing, (2000)

  • Condition: Wim Wenders' "Save Dollars, Gila Bend, Arizona" (1983; printed 1989) is in very good condition, with the saturated tones associated with dye transfer prints.

In strong, raking light it is possible to find a fine hair-line crease at the top right edge of the image area. There is also an extremely soft and nearly imperceptible soft handling mark in the upper right quadrant. This is minor. There is pinpoint sized spec of retouching within the billboard at right that has darkened slightly. Again, this is quite small and not distracting.

And finally, there is a slight suggestion of shifting tones within the lower portion of the image (the gravel in the foreground only). This can be seen at the far lower edges, where a narrow and nearly imperceptible band corresponding to the overmat is greyer in tone. Overall, the tones remain rich and strong, as expected with inherently stable dye transfer prints.

The margins and verso are bright, clean, and overall very neat, with just a couple soft handling marks in the upper margin. With Wenders' signature, negative and print dates, and edition notation "A.P.II/5" in ink on recto.
