Pair of albums with scenes of the Near and Far East with approximately 450 unmounted photographs, 140 are large-format. With an assortment of bright views of flora and fauna, captivating ethnographic portraits, spectacular architectural views, richly detailed landscapes, including a 2-part panorama, and amateur snapshots; featured photographers include samuel bourne, bourne & shepherd, woodbury & page, and shepherd & robertson. Albumen prints, 8x10 inches (20.3x25.5 cm.), with clipped handwritten captions inserted into the mounts. Oblong folios, black morocco, spines worn; edgewear; contents clean and bright. 1880s
- Notes: from the collection of inger mccabe elliott. A pair of Far- and Near East albums in remarkably strong condition, with scarce views of Vietnam and Thailand, and a two part panorama of an unidentified port (Hong Kong?). Each print is inserted into slits on the albums' pages, and nearly all have clean bright tones throughout. The first album contains ethnographic studies which are simply colorful and captivating, with portraits both in situ and in studio settings of Indian, Sikkim, Darjeeling, Javanese, and Thai figures. The second album features street scenes of Bombay, with beautiful landmark buildings, palaces, and temples; plus more than 350 unmounted Kodak #2 images, with 120 of Java; and miscellaneous scenes of Italy.
