  • Notes: first english edition, first issue with catalogue at rear dated 10/02. This copy with an 8vo sheet, laid in, containing a typed question to Conrad inquiring if it could be expected of a youth of 18 to have such a rich and historical perception as does Marlow. The front endpaper bears an inscription by conrad in response to the question: "I do not know what may be 'expected of a youth of 18'. I was twenty when I was 2nd officer of the 'Palestine' and 38 when I wrote that story [Youth] which is strictly a personal experience. As to the prose in which it is embodied it is even more strictly 'personal' than the experience. Joseph Conrad." 58a.
