WITH EARLY MANUSCRIPT ANNOTATIONS MELISH, JOHN. Map of the United States. Engraved 40-section map, 925x1480 mm overall; hand-colored in outline; moderately toned overall, minor staining in the area of Lower Canada, scattered minor spotting, small ink stain beneath the title; few early pencil notations in the area of the Red River settlements along with 5 small mounted triangular stickers in the same area; red ink tracing of tour made by an early owner of the map [see note]; linen-backed, small separation at one intersecting fold but not affecting the map; early owner's signature on backing. Philadelphia, 01 April 1819

  • Notes: Second state of the 1819 printing, with the word "Territory" dropped following Illinois and Mississippi. The 1819 edition is the first map to show the U.S.-Mexican border as established by the Adams-Onis Treaty, and the second state of the map is the first to show Missouri as a state.
The manuscript additions to the map increase its interest. An early owner has traced his route across the Atlantic through New York to the Great Lakes, then to the Red River setlements and down the Mississippi River to St. Louis, thence eastward through Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland and then turning northward and journeying up the Hudson River and leaving via the Bay of St. Lawrence.
An extremely scarce map, presented here in a solid unsophisticated state.
