Notes: first edition of a commentary on the prophet Daniel's interpretation of the dream of the Babylonian ruler Nebuchadnezzar, and in particular on the messianic significance of the stone destroying the statue in Daniel 2:34, referred to in the title of the book. Menasseh identified the stone with that upon which Jacob slept and with which David slew Goliath, and the 4 beasts of Daniel's own apocalyptic dream with the monarchies of Babylon, Persia, Macedon, and Rome, which were to be succeeded by the monarchy of Israel. Rembrandt illustrated these subjects in 4 etchings on a single plate, which was later divided. Palau 162815; Roth, A Life of Menasseh ben Israel (1934), page 97.
This copy has brilliant impressions of the etchings, with small margins, each with soft vertical crease near outer edge from having been folded to fit into the book. The Statue and David & Goliath are each in the 4th state (of 4) described by Usticke and Biörklund; Jacob's Ladder and Daniel's Vision are each in Usticke's 3rd state (of 3), and Biörklund's 2nd state (of 2). Bartsch 36; rated RRR+ by Usticke ( "all four subjects are very rare" ).
