1885-1968

III Olympic Winter Games / Lake Placid, USA. 1932.

Condition A: small pin holes in top corners.

"Until 1932, each Olympiad had taken place in Europe. Now for the first time, the venue for both winter and summer Games was to be America. The third Olympic Winter Games, in 1932, were held in Lake Placid, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, a town with fewer than 4,000 inhabitants . . . Unfortunately the Games were held in the midst of a worldwide depression and many countries were unable to send well-prepared and equipped teams" (Olympics p. 41).

This printing features the name of the tourism company at the bottom; Thomas Cook was a prominent British travel company that existed from 1841 to 2001, arranging transport, tours and holidays worldwide. The company's first tours in the U.S. began in 1866, and was in charge of the publicity and organization of transportation for the Olympic Games for the 1896, 1900, and 1904 games. According to the current Olympics website, "this image was also used for the emblem of the Games. More than 16,000 copies were printed in English, French and German. Some 15,000 of them were distributed abroad (mainly in Europe) with the help of the American Express Company, Thomas Cook & Son, the National Olympic Committees, sports federations, railway and steamship companies and also travel agencies" (https://www.olympics.com/en/olympic-games/lake-placid-1932/logo-design).

Olympics pl. 25, Art of Skiing p. 123, Sports d'Hiver p. 76, Crouse p. 118.
