"After the onslaught by the Germans in 1939, the remainder of Poland's air force (154 pilots) flew to Great Britain where it was re-formed under the command of the Royal Air Force and flew regular air strikes on Germany" ( The Polish Poster, p. 65).

Benda was a Polish-born artist, who moved to New York in 1902 and studied art under Robert Henri and Edward Penfield. While he spent his adult life in America, he designed many war effort and relief posters for his home country during World War I. As an illustrator and member of the American Society of Illustrators, he worked for magazines such as Scribner's, Colliers, McClure's, and Ladies' Home Journal. Benda later became best-known for painting, writing about and sculpting masks for film and theater.
