Weingart began his studies at the Merz Akademie in Stuttgart. He moved to Basel in 1963 and began to study under Armin Hoffmann and Emil Ruder at the Basel School of Design (the Kunstgewerbeschule). By 1968, he was asked to teach a course in typography. His work challenged the rational order and dogmatic rules of the international style. "He instilled creativity and desire of experimentation into the ossified Swiss typographical industry and reflected this renewal in his own work" (Lars-Muller). As a teacher, he had a huge influence on designers all over the world, including Americans April Greiman and Daniel Friedman. These five lithographs are pedagogic examples and are numbered 1 to 5, but are not in chronological order. Group includes: Organized Text Structured (1974); From Simple to Complex Text Structures (1973); Calendar Picture (1971-2); Typographic Signs (1971-2); and Typography as (1971-2). MoMA 264.2002.1-5.
