He never struck me as one I could care for or admire . . . he discovered the system of sacrificing two northern soldiers in order to kill one Confederate & Sherman adopted it. Sherman was a hard determined sub-ordinate to a hard determined Chief,but in my opinion neither were great generals though they both understood how to kill the Confederacy. I don't publish these views because the Americans as you know are so thin skinned that they resentcriticism on everything they do, or everything belonging to them . . ." Wolseley (1833-1913) Field Marshal, Commander in Chief of the British Army. He wrote several pro-Southern books about the Civil Warat the turn of the cen-tury.
