Women of Color: Four Early Photographs.

Including: 1) A large mid-19th century mounted albumen studio photograph of a woman in mourning clothes, with gloves, hat and veil, in full standing with her hand on a wicker chair, toning and spotting, the image 5 1/2 x 4 in. on a heavy embossed card mount measuring 10 3/4 x 6 3/4 in.

2) A full-length cabinet card photo portrait of a Black woman in a white gown and apron, holding a candle, identified on the verso as Nora Counsel [?] a nurse at a Hospital in Boston, dated 1891; taken by Addie M. Gendron (1855-1904) in Boston, 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in.

3) A circa-1900 oval bust studio portrait of a young woman by Monroe of Denver, Colorado; with her hair up in a bun and adorned with a large white flower, her dress with striped seersucker fabric and a wide lace yoke; the photo trimmed to an oval and mounted on a fancy pre-printed frame decorated with filigree designs with the photographer's name and location at the bottom corner, corners of the mount bumped and chipped, one with a large diagonal fold mended with tape on the verso; for another portrait by Monroe see: https://digital.denverlibrary.org/digital/collection/p15330coll22/id/5152/rec/27; the photo 5 x 3 1/2 in. on a 7 x 9 in. mount.

4) Circa 1920s large black-and-white portrait of a smiling woman in flapper garb, including leather slippers, a belted short dress and cap with a white band seated on a concrete post at the corner of a clapboard building; some marginal chips, small portion of one corner cut away, 9 1/4 x 7 in. (4)

Shipping

Upon request, Swann will facilitate the shipping of purchases to out-of-town buyers at an additional charge for packing, shipping and insurance, but will not be responsible for any loss, damage or delay resulting from the packing, handling and shipping thereof.
