  • Notes: Annie Turnbo Malone, a rival to the celebrated Madam Walker, launched the popular Poro line of hair products and cosmetics in St. Louis in 1902, later relocating to Chicago. The original Poro College was launched in St. Louis in 1918, with franchises following in other cities. Clubs were also formed in many towns by agents for Poro products. This lot includes:

    Manuscript minutes of the White Plains Poro Club. [31] pages of minutes, plus [6] pages on membership records at rear. Quarto, 10 x 7¾ inches, disbound notebook on lined paper, with original detached boards present; minimal wear to contents. Includes planning for a visit by "Mrs. Malone and her moving pictures," held at a local church. Attendance and dues for 20 members are recorded in the rear of the volume. White Plains, NY, 13 September 1932 to 21 March 1934.

    Photograph, 7¼ x 9½ inches, captioned on verso "Poro Club, organized 1932" (presumably the White Plains club); minor wear.

    Diploma for the Poro School of New York. Printed form, 14 x 16¾ inches, completed in manuscript including printed signature of Annie M. Turnbo Malone, with two embossed gilt seals; folds, moderate toning and dampstaining. Diploma is for a postgraduate course certifying 1,000 hours of study including manicuring, pressing, scalp treatments, marcelling, shop management, and much more. New York, 10 May 1939.
